Chestnut stew - Greek Recipe

  • 500gr onions
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp allspice
  • 1/2 tsp cloves powder
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1/2 cup cognac
  • 500gr fresh tomatoes, grated
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 400gr chestnuts, precooked
  • salt
  • pepper


Cut the onions in slices.
Heat the olive oil in a wide pan over medium heat and add the onion slices.
Sprinkle with allspice, carnation, sugar, salt and pepper.
Fry them for a few minutes until almost caramelised.
Add wine and cognac and cook for approximately 20 minutes.
Add the tomatoes, cinnamon, bay leaves and the chestnuts.
Cook for 15-20 minutes.
Pour in a little bit of water to thin the sauce, if desired.
Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Enjoy it with basmati rice!
